With summer just around the corner, now is the perfect time to start planning some camping adventures. If you’re a keen camper and live in Brisbane, you’re in luck because there are many beautiful and exciting camping spots within a two-hour drive of the city. Below is a guide to 5 of the best-kept secret camping spots near Brisbane:

  • Cylinder Beach, Stradbroke Island
This magnificent camping ground is pretty much as close as you can get to the beach without fear of being washed out to sea. Hop on the ferry at Cleveland, and before you know it, you’ll have set up camp and be resting in your camp chair staring out at the pristine white sand and deep blue sea. There are beautiful treks around this camping spot, and you might even be lucky enough to spot a dolphin or a whale. If you’re interested in outdoor activities, then this is the ideal location for you, with options like stand up paddleboarding, cycling, hiking, surfing and scuba diving available.
  • Bigriggen Park, Scenic Rim
With some jaw-dropping scenery (there is kind of a big clue in the name), this is one of the best and most beautiful camping spots in Queensland. Out in the Aussie bush, you’ll be treated to over 100 acres of rivers, hilltops and waterfalls interspersed with seas of luscious Gum trees. This camping ground has spotless amenities and gives you the option of powered and non-powered camping depending on how much you want to switch off and zone out while on your camping holiday. Also, if you have a furry friend that you dread leaving alone for the weekend, Bigriggen Park is definitely for you.
    • Mount Barney, Scenic Rim
Situated in the heart of Scenic Rim, at the base of the second tallest peak in Queensland and next to the World Heritage-listed Mt Barney National Park, this truly is a world-class camping location. If you fancy a bit of a hike, take the lower portals track and along the way you can enjoy a dip in a beautiful water hole sitting at the foot of a magical waterfall. Then as the sun sets, make sure to take a few minutes to gaze at the ever-changing colours streaked across the sky behind the rocky peak.
    • Lake Wivenhoe Campgrounds, Wivenhoe Dam
This is a beautifully classic camping spot with open grassy spaces, shady trees, stunning lake views and the almost constant hum of the local wildlife. Powerboats aren’t permitted on the dam making this the ideal location for some peaceful fishing, camping, kayaking and swimming. If you’re looking for a relaxing, nature-filled getaway, Lake Wivenhoe is the place for you.
  • Lake Moogerah, Scenic Rim
Located right on the shore of the magnificent Lake Moogerah, this campsite is surrounded by wilderness and mountains and simply oozes tranquillity. This location is a favourite amongst photographers which is hardly surprising given its spectacular scenery. When on Lake Moogerah you’ll find it hard to believe that you’re so close to both Brisbane and the Gold Coast since the serenity of this location feels like paradise.
