Having the right fuel in your diet can be make or break when it comes to an adventure. Packing just anything you have lying around in your pantry or picking up a few of your favorite snacks from the grocery store just won’t cut it when it comes to a treacherous journey. At Valhalla, we have trekked these roads before, so we have compiled a list of what you need to include in your food supply the next time you venture out.

Non-Perishables.

Stocking your food and drink supply with non-perishable items is a must and should be a consideration for every item that you pack. Non-perishable items have a long shelf life and don’t require refrigeration to keep them from spoiling. This is key for when you are wanting to pack light or have limited storage in a backpack. Non perishable items don’t have to be boring either we have a range of options from snacks, dinner and even sweets.

Nutrient-Dense Foods

Having foods that keep you energised is important when it comes to a mission as your energy output is typically higher than your usual day to day output. Nutrient-dense foods are typically high in nutrients while being low in calories. Great examples of these foods include vegetables, fruits, lean proteins, beans and nuts. You’ll still want to increase your calorie intake when you are exerting more energy, but eating more of these types of nutrient-packed foods will have you performing at your most optimal as well helping you to combat sickness and fatigue in the process.

Protein Rich Meals

Protein is an important macronutrient in everyday life, but it is even more so when you are exercising a lot or are on the move. Protein boosts glycogen storage, reduces muscle soreness and promotes muscle repair and these benefits are exactly the kind of advantages you need during missions and adventures. Sourcing your proteins from lean meats, fish, beans and legumes is optimal, try to avoid fatty cuts of meat when making your choice.

The Right Storage and Utensils

Keeping your food in the right place may seem small, but with unpredictable temperature changes and limited storage, it is key to keeping your food secure and safe to eat. Having multifunctional utensils and compartment storage are efficient options for when you are tight on space. You will want to keep these items to a minimum to ensure that your backpack or other luggage stays as lightweight as possible, as you don’t want to be using excess energy on carrying your food around when the whole point is to select foods that will boost your energy!
