5 Winter Camping Destinations
July 13, 2020 Valhalla Tactical

Most people think of camping as being strictly a summertime activity, but at Valhalla, we think those people are truly missing out on some of the most unique and exhilarating experiences that Australia has to offer. Besides, when you have the right outdoor equipment, you can be prepared for any and all conditions. During a time when everyone has been suffering from a bit of ‘lockdown cabin fever’, a lot of us are busting to get out and explore the outdoors, regardless of the month or season. Below are some of our top camping destinations during winter:

Beaudesert, Queensland

A lot of camping spots in Queensland are perfect for winter camping since it’s one of the warmer states in Australia- it is called the Sunshine State after all. Beaudesert is ideal because it has plenty of cosy pubs and sleepy cafes to offer, so if you’re looking for that idyllic winter getaway, this atmosphere is perfect for you! If you’re a keen hiker you’ll also have access to countless different trails in the surrounding national parks and mountains.

Whitehaven Beach, Queensland

If you’re the kind of person who enjoys a touch of ‘summer’ all year round, then Whitehaven is the place for you. You’ll find that even during the winter months, Whitehaven doesn’t require more than a long-sleeved t-shirt or light jacket. What’s more, who wouldn’t want to camp in Australia’s very own slice of paradise? The Whitsundays are known for their striking, turquoise waters as well as the pristine, silky white sand that’s among the purest in the world.

Nitmiluk National Park, Northern Territory

Located in the “Top End” of the Northern Territory, this beautiful camping spot is, in fact, much more suited for a winter escape than a summer holiday. summer is the wet season in the top end is often unbearably humid with extreme monsoonal periods of downpours. Instead, reserve this camping destination for the May-October portion of the year when you can enjoy dry days full of sunshine and crisp winter nights where you don’t have to worry about your tent flooding!

The Grampians, Victoria

This spot is often swarming with flies and other campers during summer, not to mention the uncomfortable heat. During winter, however, you can enjoy a camping trip without unwanted guests buzzing around and soak up the views of the amazing sunsets. The chilly nights will be easily remedied with a toasty campfire and during the day you have the often of many different hikes and trails nearby as well as countless kilometres of 4WD tracks.

Albany, Western Australia

Again this is the perfect time to escape the crowds and have some of Western Australia’s most untouched and stunning beaches to yourself. Travel back in time by visiting the nearby colonial settlement and explore the beautiful West Cape Howe National Park. What’s really cool is that a winter getaway means you have a good chance of witnessing large pods of whales migrating!
